Advanced Searching

Like a simple search, an advanced search prompts you for a single search criterion—such as a product name or ingredient CAS number—and shows all products with data matching your criterion.

An advanced search, however, offers much more flexibility. You can select which product data areas are searched, control how matches are found, focus the search on MSDSs written in a certain language or products at certain locations, and more. You can use the default setting for any advanced search option, but the procedure below explains how to use every option.

Note: Most punctuation you enter in your search criterion is ignored by an advanced search. This ensures no matches are missed due to varying placements of hyphens, commas, etc.

To perform an advanced search:

Starting at the Product Search page (How do I get there?), do the following:

  1. Click Advanced in the upper right.

    The Advanced Search page opens.

  2. In the Search for field, enter your search criterion.

  3. Under Advanced Search Options, open the Options area. (This area is initially open by default.)

The Options area shows its available search options.

  4. Select any desired search options:

  5. Under Advanced Search Options, open the Search Scope area.

The Search Scope area shows all product data areas where the search can find matches for your criterion.

  6. Select all data areas you want to search. Clear all data areas you do not want to search.

  7. Under Advanced Search Options, open the Manufacturer area.

The Manufacturer area shows a menu of product manufacturers.

  8. To focus the search on products from a specific manufacturer, select that manufacturer in the Manufacturer menu.

  9. Under Advanced Search Options, open the Location area.

The Location area shows a menu of all locations in your location tree.

  10. To focus the search on products assigned to (used or stored at) a specific location, select that location in the Location menu.

  11. Click Start the search.

Search Results appear, showing how many products match/contain your search criterion in any or all of the following data areas (depending on your search scope and system configuration):

If your search scope includes any additional MSDS resources—such as IHS Dolphin Online or manufacturer collections—the number of common name matches in these resources is also displayed. (See Searching IHS Dolphin Online for details on using IHS Dolphin Online search results.)

  12. Click the area whose matches you want to view.

If you click any area other than Ingredients: The matching products are displayed, listed alphabetically by the chosen matching data type.

If you click Ingredients: All ingredients matching your search criterion are displayed. Click an ingredient to see all products that contain it and—if you have access to regulatory list information—all regulatory lists that cite it.

  13. Click the product you want to view.

The Product Information page opens, showing the product's current MSDS. To return to your search results, click the "back" arrow in the upper left.

See Viewing a Product for details on viewing the different areas of the Product Information page.
